Llyn Foulkes in Studio

Llyn Foulkes is a study in contrarianism. He moves freely between jazz and visual art; tremendous, loving craftsmanship and cultural critique; graphic fluency and hard-won painterly Materialism; bright flashes of angst and expansive, generous inspiration. After 60 years or so in the cultural trenches, Foulkes finally has some big reasons to smile — including an upcoming retrospective and his participation in the next Documenta, with paintings and a 40-day residency for his astonishing one-man band performative sculpture. Shana Nys Dambrot tried hard to keep up with him at his Downtown studio.
