Ear Meal

Weekly, live performances by experimental musicians.

Michael Brewster

A typical Acoustic Sculpture is a mix of electronic tones emitted into a bare room by a single loudspeaker. The sounds echoing through each other produce a field of sound populated by places of differing loudness and tonal content. To see an Acoustic Sculpture, we must shift our sculpture viewing habits from the “stand and look” behavior to an exploratory “move and listen” approach; slowly walking our ears, instead of moving our eyes, through the elaborate spaces of “the room”.

Special thanks to Thinh Nguyen

I really am excited to present Michael Brewster on Ear Meal. He was very generous with his time and invited Thinh and I to his studio in Venice CA. Michael was Thinh’s mentor at Claremont College, so when the opportunity was presented, I jumped on it. I had never met him before but it was Michael’s work that pushed me toward sound art in my own work when I was a student at Otis in the early 1980’s.

This is a very intimate and unique video document of Michael’s studio. I hope you enjoy it.
